# About Afloat

At Afloat, we make tools that make financial caregiving the easy part. Here's how and why.

## How we got here

**Most families find out the hard way**

When a parent or spouse suddenly can't manage their money, someone in the family has to step in. Usually there are no instructions, no passwords, and no list of which bills are due. We built Afloat because that moment is common, it is stressful, and almost nobody is ready for it.

- The bills don't wait. The mortgage, the insurance and the utilities keep coming due while the family is at the hospital.
- The information is scattered. It lives in the mail, in a checkbook register, and in one person's head.

So we made a navigator that tells you what to do first and keeps the whole family on the same page.

## Who we serve

**Families facing the sudden incapacitation of a loved one**

The Afloat emergency financial navigator is designed for families dealing with sudden incapacitation of a loved one. That means someone can't manage their money because they're in the hospital, unconscious, or dealing with memory loss.

We have more financial caregiving tools coming soon, so stay tuned!

## How it's free

**Being no-cost is the most important part**

The last thing a family needs when they're facing a health emergency is another expense. Our [app](https://afloatfinance.org/app) and [educational resources](https://afloatfinance.org/resources/) are free because we know it's the right thing to do.

So how does Afloat make money?

- Voluntary contributions from supporters*
- Other products that cost money

*Afloat is not a 501(c)(3) organization, and contributions are not tax-deductible donations.
